Apollon Smintheion at Gülpınar in Çanakkale's Ayvacık district was a major Late Hellenistic sanctuary of the Troad, known for a temple of Apollo with Iliad reliefs and a mouse emblem.
Apollon Smintheion is a place (Sanctuary) in Turkey, Canakkale. Main periods: Hellenistic Period.
Smintheion is a sanctuary near Gülpınar, a town in the Ayvacık district of Çanakkale Province. The Ministry's Turkish text calls it one of the Troad's important cult centres, and the Culture Portal rates it among the most significant sanctuaries of Late Hellenistic Anatolia. The Ministry's English page places the site in the south-west of the Troad, at the western tip of the Asian continent. Pleiades links the shrine to Homer's Apollo Smintheus, the god whose priest was Chryses, and locates the remains near modern Gülpınar.
Location and access
According to the Ministry's Turkish page the temple lies in a spot called Bahçeler-içi, where the valley begins to rise to the north-west and north-east of Gülpınar, a settlement once known as Külahlı. The Culture Portal says minibuses from central Çanakkale run to Gülpınar village. Nearby sites listed by the Ministry include Troy, Alexandria Troas and Assos. Opening hours and entry rules are best checked on the official page; its Turkish version states that the Museum Card is valid for Turkish citizens.
History
The Ministry reports prehistoric settlement remains at the sanctuary dated to roughly 5000 BCE. The place is better known for its Hellenistic phase: both the Ministry and the Culture Portal put the temple at about 150 BCE, while Pleiades describes the Ionic sanctuary and the adjoining town as remains of the second century BCE.
The god's epithet points to a local concern. The sources explain Smintheus as 'lord of mice'. The Culture Portal presents the cult as that of an Apollo who shielded farmers from mouse damage and notes that it is the only Anatolian Apollo cult known by a mouse emblem. The Ministry's English page likewise ties the epithet to the god's link with mice.
Main structures
The Temple of Apollo Smintheus
The temple, the principal building of the precinct, follows the Ionic order and a pseudodipteral layout, meaning a false double colonnade. The Ministry calls it the only example of its kind in the Troad. The Culture Portal counts eight columns across each end and fourteen along each flank. On authorship the pages differ slightly: the English page says the architect Hermogenes designed the temple, while the Turkish page and the Portal say his plan was applied. Either way, the building is tied to that Hellenistic master.
Its decoration sets it apart. Every source mentions relief friezes taken from Homer's Iliad and the Trojan War, and the Culture Portal describes this feature as unique.
Cult statue and mouse figures
The Culture Portal records that a leg fragment measuring 110 centimetres from an Apollo statue by Skopas of Paros was recovered in the naos. The statue appears on Hellenistic coins of Alexandria Troas and is mentioned by ancient writers. It is thought to have stood about five metres tall and to have shown the god treading on a mouse. Today life-size mouse sculptures made at the excavation team's request stand on the temple steps, and foot sculptures modelled on the lost statue are displayed on the museum terrace.
Other buildings
Beyond the temple the sanctuary has an altar for sacrifice and offerings, a bridge for visiting worshippers, a sacred road, Roman baths for ritual washing, the channels and tanks supplying them, streets lined with statues and inscriptions, a heroon, and villas. The Ministry and the Portal give the same list.
Excavation
The Ministry and Culture Portal pages do not state when excavation began or who leads it, so no such details are given here. The Portal only mentions that the excavation directorate commissioned the mouse and foot sculptures. For research history, consult the Çanakkale Museum Directorate and the Ministry's current announcements.
